The Slit

Project type

Group [ w/ Xenia Avgoustinou ]

Date

Spring '17

Location

Athens, Greece

Context

Academic _ Architectural - Residential

The main idea for the Residential complex is to create a “heart” for the building, a central area that will serve as an open space for the residents to enjoy the Athenian sun. We approach the plot as if it were a 3-dimensional box from which the building would be extracted, carved like the sculptures of Rodin, that were just “trapped” inside the stone. The open area is cut out of that volume, offering a yard which gives a sense of privacy, without actually creating an enclosed atrial space.
The “slit” in the volume, helps with the ventilation and lighting of the interior spaces, while also creating a passage which connects the building with the main boulevard, allowing the movement of the city to invade its core. The interior spaces are organized using a grid which follows the orthogonality of the plot. The internal surfaces of the two buildings are covered by a mesh, that serves as sun protection, while differentiating the internal from the external surfaces of the volumes, enhancing the schism between the two units.
